El Morro
Built between 1540 and 1783, this fortress kept sea borne enemies out of San Juan. This single
compact unit, which majestically rises 140 feet above the sea, is the most striking of the
city's military fortifications. El Morro features a maze of secret access tunnels and dungeons,
and a small museum. It has been designated a National Historic Site by the Department of the
Interior of the United States.
